Some Guiding Principles and Practices

The ZIHT/PTF is established under a number of important principles guiding sustainability everywhere.

Many people think that those who lead on issues regarding sustainability and healing the planet are really arbitrary and biased in their decision criteria — the same people who argue that economic criteria are neutral, unbiased, and yield results with only positive impacts on people’s well-being. The following principles guide the ZIHT/PTF instead.

Total Inclusion

To work with others in building momentum and establishing a culture of healing the planet in conjunction with bringing peace in harmony with nature.

Common Ground

To construct a common ground for the blooming of deeply felt human and spiritual collective values: cooperation, interdependence, solidarity with all species, justice, equity, love, compassion — values that transcend religion, politics, ethnicity, culture and power structures.

Collective Actions

To nurture a fertile ground to enhance concentration and environmental awareness into all aspects of life on this planet, and to seek various forms of collective action: human rights and responsibilities, the right of nature and all forms of life, spiritual practices, environmental activism, conservation and deep ecology, the elimination of egocentrism, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Sustainability Principles

A few principles of sustainable development to be considered in program implementation:

  1. Conservation as Opposed to Exploitation
  2. Interdependence
  3. All Forms of Life
  4. The Inter Spatial Principle
  5. The Inter Temporal Principle
  6. Decentralization
  7. Quality of Life
  8. Collective, Community Property
  9. Social Construction
  10. Meaningful Public Participation
  11. The Precautionary Principle
  12. Collaboration, Partnerships, Networks, and Enabling Environment
  13. Ecological Regeneration and Integrity

Spiritual Environmentalism

Behind every principle or human value there is one or more spiritual dimensions. Key principles include:

  1. Total interdependence
  2. Acknowledgment that we must take care of creation
  3. We are not owners of the planet
  4. The rights of future generations
  5. The right to destroy has never existed
  6. A spiritual being lives for the others
  7. The world as a collective
  8. Recognition that spiritual values do matter
  9. The imperative that all sentient beings are on the path to enlightenment
  10. The need for spiritual justice
  11. The Earth is a being

These spiritual principles and dimensions are essential to understand who is a leader, what is leadership, and how to implement the ZIHT/PTF programs. One cannot disregard these principles, and thus one is also to focus on the spiritual dimensions of leadership — the true inner abilities of conscious sustainability leadership.

One Spirit and One Soul

A new consciousness

Healing of the planet and the attainment of world peace needs a new consciousness — a new capacity to address issues and challenges that the present paradigm has failed to establish. There is a global consensus that the problems of materialism will not be resolved with more materialism. Thus the major emphasis the Foundation gives to non-material solutions to humanity’s problems: the spiritual dimensions of life on this planet.

The development of these spiritual dimensions creates the conditions for a different understanding of the nature of the planet and of all living beings — in particular, our understanding that the planet is not a thing but a living being. The same applies to world peace: higher levels of consciousness and spiritual realization change the way we approach world peace — peace not as a thing, but as a state of being. We will not be able to buy peace; we must self-realize peace. Thus, world peace is the result of inner peace, and only inner peace will be the road to world peace. Therefore, each and every theme, activity and project that becomes an integral component of the Foundation will incorporate spirituality within it.

THE INTEGRATION OF SPIRITUALITY INTO SUSTAINABILITY

Fundamental to every activity undertaken by ZIHT/PTF for planetary healing and sustainable development is the recognition of both material and non-material (spiritual) factors. The organization does not view its mission as purely material—whether in program design, training, leadership formation, or other activities. Sustainable development extends beyond a material phenomenon, encompassing a collection of values, a bundle of rights, a lifestyle, and a state of consciousness, which is why the spiritual dimensions of sustainability are fundamental.

THE CONCEPT OF PLANET EARTH: A LIVE ENTITY

Most people and foundations operate under the assumption that nature is an object and that human beings “own” it, granting them the freedom to do as they please—such as continually cutting down natural forests and depleting the oceans as if these actions are acceptable. In contrast, ZIHT/PTF adopts the perspective that the planet is a living entity encompassing millions of diverse forms of life and intelligence, with human beings representing just one among them. This approach by ZIHT/PTF initiates a critical discussion regarding the ethical dilemma of how far human beings are permitted to transform nature.

THE APPROACH TO HEALING

While standard approaches to planetary healing rely primarily on a material and physical paradigm—such as ecological reconstruction, tree planting, air and water decontamination, and reduced consumption—ZIHT/PTF advances beyond this model by treating the Earth as a living entity. Under this consciousness paradigm, the healing process is amplified through the interconnectedness of human consciousness and nature’s consciousness, utilizing meditation, prayer, yoga, and contemplation to harness and multiply the power of nature’s intelligence and wisdom.

THE ECONOMIC PARADIGM

Modern neoliberal economics, defined by a “more is better” mindset, constant scaling, and a market that underprices natural resources, is the primary driver of environmental destruction and resource depletion. To counter this, ZIHT/PTF champions a circular economy and a sustainable system supported by empowered citizenship, recognizing that economic systems must evolve to secure a sustainable future. In doing so, the organization places special emphasis on navigating the trade-offs between natural capital and social capital to guide its core decisions.

THE ESSENCE OF GOVERNANCE

A significant governance gap exists both within countries and globally, which must be filled to achieve planetary healing and global peace. ZIHT/PTF will focus specifically on governance, placing particular emphasis on the active engagement of civil society. Currently, governance is largely centered on the nation-state, with countries expending massive resources and human energy to defend political boundaries against challenges that transcend borders. Consequently, ZIHT/PTF will also emphasize governance driven by the human factor and recognize its decisive role in healing the planet.

THE INSTRUMENTS

ZIHT/PTF will employ a diverse range of methods, combining traditional conservation practices like tree planting and natural forest preservation with approaches centered on spiritual practices and the inner and outer empowerment of individuals. This comprehensive strategy addresses planetary healing across multiple dimensions: material and spiritual, individual and collective, private and public, rich and poor, developed and developing countries, and local, national, and global scales. These tools will be integrated into all foundation activities, including meetings, leadership training, and the development of academic materials.

THE INTEGRATION WITH THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL AGENDA

The imperative to heal the planet must take center stage within the social, corporate, and political agendas of nations and international institutions, as these entities hold the necessary power and material resources to exercise leadership and commitment. ZIHT/PTF will serve as an effective vehicle for uniting the essential elements required to redirect public attention toward planetary healing.

THE ROLE OF INDIGENOUS WISDOM

The wisdom of indigenous peoples is essential for planetary healing, as their cosmovision provides a solid foundation for creating tools and processes to heal the five elements of life: earth, space, wind, water, and fire. ZIHT/PTF will prioritize convening indigenous leaders and serving as a vehicle to properly apply their knowledge and advice to the design and implementation of policies, programs, and projects. Furthermore, “indigenous knowledge” encompasses not only tribal traditions but also the ancient wisdom of long-standing traditions like Buddhism, all of which are major contributors to planetary healing and world peace.

THE GREAT ATTENTION TO THE VULNERABLE

Planetary healing is not merely an ecological phenomenon; it is as deeply human and sentient as any other process, requiring focused attention across numerous human and natural systems. Because the destruction of the planet has generated widespread vulnerability among humans, animals, and plants alike, the unique hallmark of ZIHT/PTF is its dedicated focus on protecting these vulnerable beings at both local and global levels.

HOLDING AS A SUMMIT/APEX FOUNDATION

As ZIHT/PTF develops and gains experience, it will offer its organizational platform to serve smaller foundations that lack the material and human resources to scale the impact of their missions. Consequently, the PTF aims to play a crucial role in strengthening and solidifying all potential interventions for planetary healing, while avoiding hierarchy or usurping the leadership of other organizations. Furthermore, ZIHT/PTF will help channel the voices and mandates of smaller civil society organizations, as strengthening all efforts directed toward planetary healing is mandatory for achieving world peace.
